In my 40's and still love this show....my favorite will always be, Crasher. She's the best gobot.
I am very surprised that they never did a crossover between the gobots and the transformers back in the day. If they would have done this right, I think this would have been really excellent and it probably went over pretty good. By the way are the gobots cousins to the transformers or a whole different situation. Well the gobots do kind of remind me of Junior transformers, in the way they do.
Just reimagined for a fanfic I created this intro for an hypotetic MACHINE ROBO us/Japan coproduction... We see Chronos from the distance... Then Rom Stol, Leina, Turbo, Scooter robo, Leader One and Blue Jet arrive to Earth... Clash with a Diondora, Grujios and Gadess... Refrain "Machine Robo, Machine Robo" in the style of "the Gobots" Gadess call forth Zod Grooouarrr Zod clashes with Baikanfu and is defeated... Gandorians chase earthlings allied with machine robo. Leina flies with Triple Jim Pincher and Scorp morph and escape Blue jet gives chase Then Rom Stol robotic form Turbo and Drill Robo exchange blasts with 3 Gandorians... Final refrain "Machine Robooooo" It's Challenge of the Machine Robo!
This hypotetic Challenge of the Machine Robo, while being a coproduction between US and Japan, had a few differences. Due to censorships, characters that in Japanese version do die, do survive in US version, being often loaded into Ambulance Robo (like Sarah the daughter of Dozer that could morph into a scooter in MR episode 21... Rom Stol in Challenge of Machine Robo version says her "you will be fine on a few days, and you proved worth to be a Machine Robo!" then we see Ambulance Robo bringing her to hospital. The US episode concludes with Rom Stol and his warriors talking with Dozer "we will attack Gandorians fiercer to protect our planet" ). The repented Gandorian Clay, instead of dying, is teleported back to Gandorian base for "reprogramming"..." Let's assure this carrion will be more loyal in the future...". The Challenge of Machine Robo US version ended with a Motion Picture in which the great Gandorian boss Gadess gathers an Army of Zods to enslave both Chronos and Earth. Rom Stol, using some sort of "matrix" on a heated space battle, annihilates him and -via mental link- wipes away the Zods that were ready to attack Chronos (meanwhile Leina, Leader One, Blue Jet, Turbo and the MR had put attacking Gandorian armies on their knees using the Hyribead). Challenge of Machine Robo: The Motion Picture ends with the MR crowd and Earthling allies cheering for Rom Stol and Leina with a massive triple hooray, while Gadess' mangled head forms a new moon of Chronos... :)

i had numerous gobots and transformers,, and some of the gobots were really well done. and the transformations were really complex.
Their planet looks like a half eaten apple core.

Gobots and Transformers are different in toy lines. Gobots is Tonka, Transformers is Hasbro.
And both are now owned by Hasbro in the us

+Ben Geiger give me a break - this show was produced by the award-winning Michael Reaves, who's one of the best cartoon writers anywhere. Voltron's stories were crap compared to Mighty Orbots, which was produced by some of the people who animated Macross.
+manofsan voltron came out before this, plus macross (Robotech) won a couple of Emmys.back in the day.
Ben Geiger I'm a Robotech fan, and I never heard of Robotech winning an Emmy. But Michael Reaves, who wrote Mighty Orbots, won an Emmy back in 1993 for his work on Batman

One silly question if they can fly anyway what would be the point of Leader-1 transforming into a jet?
How is that different to Starscream and the other Decepticons who turned into jets, helicopters etc in Transformers? Their vehicle forms were designed to blend in with earth vehicles, similar to the Transformers alternate forms also being disguises.

Michael Carr They could change into flyer modes on Cybertron as well and they didn't need to blend in there. There was this episode when Starscream used his "boot jets" to hover over a wall. I think all that in the cartoon with them all being able to fly was a way to get around s few problems and to make it easier for the writers and artists.
SHADOWWOLF77 The ability to fly was on Earth and Cybertron had nothing to do with disguise though, it was just an ability in robot or alt form respectively. Their alt forms were altered to resemble earth jets as a means of disguise and as the most suitable modification to the existing alt mode. In the early episodes of Gobots it's mentioned that some (not all) Gobot alt forms were designed to resemble "Earth type vehicles"

Loved the cartoon, though the fast-moving animation in the opening credits was a little overwhelming when I had just woken up and my eyes were still all blurry.
It was one of my favorite cartoons. Missed that show.

30 years ago this fall....one of the few first Saturday morning cartoons that were jointly made by US, Japanese, and German companies. Ratings for this were horrible compared to smurfs and muppet babies.
Yes it was. I remember watching this in Germany on AFN as a kid. Followed by Danguard Ace then Voltron. Man childhood was great

okay, is it just me or did the combined robot design borrow HEAVILY from the super robot anime "Six God Combination GodMars"?
It did resemble God Mars.
it did, just look at GodMars GX-40 robot figures and you see the uncanny resemblance.
Same company, this was a joint collaboration I believe.
Well if you mean the company who released Orbots cartoon, they were a separate company/ies. They ended up getting sued for "infringement of toy likeness" by Gobots' Tonka/Bandai who claimed the company (ripped off) their Bandai GODMARS toy designs. I swear the single robots do have some crazy similarities themselves but no mistaking the combined bot is like Godmar's twin.
